Real Boxing 5th anniversary!

It has already been 5 years since the Real Boxing franchise started to rock in the mobile world. Wow!

I personally wasn’t involved in this project from the very beginning, but still – I put some of my work and soul into it in updates of Real Boxing ( did you like tournaments? You’re welcome ;) ), but mostly into the RealBoxing 2 in general.

Both projects were technologically challenging and we’ve learned a lot from them. Using this knowledge we’re brewing some even more tasty stuff right now… But you will see it soon :)

Tanking Through Unknown – the Slavic Game Jam 2017 game

Yet, the another game jam! This time it was the 3rd edition of the Slavic Game Jam in Warsaw. Lots of Slavs, Nordics and bunch of other awesome people and games. Oh boy, there were a lot of games! About 86 if I remember correctly. You can check all of them here (the winner is Dot. if you wanna just play in the best one). But here… I’m gonna write some about my entry.

Failtifex Studio – the AmJam 2017 game

Another Game Jam has passed and oh boy, what a jam! This time it was organized by polish gamedev team Artifex Mundi in their office and a lot of one of the best developers did gather to make games within 42 hours. This game jam theme was: “Fail Fast”.

Lunar Maze

So there was a game jam lately. A really Huuuge Game Jam I must say. During 24 hours we had to make a game based on a specific theme. The theme was… well… It was nothing explicit. The only thing we’ve got was this image:

The interpretations were vary. There were games about Lego, about stairs and about relativity and impossible geometry. Most of the games were playing with the geometry. Mine too!

Starting an adventure with the Unreal Engine 4

Unreal Engine 4 is a vast and powerful tool which makes making games fun! But, as any complex piece of software, it might be challenging to start learning it. It is not because of a lack of the documentation or tutorials, but because of, ironically, the huge amount of them! Try to search for a UE4 tutorial on youtube. The number of results is overwhelming! Where to start?

During my learning process I was digging around, searching for a perfect, well explaining tutorial which will introduce me to the world of the UE4. I was trying to even do my own series, which didn’t end bad, but it’s far worse than I’d like to. This article will mostly show the collection of the best learning materials I was able to find, so you won’t have to go through the same issue I had.

What is quite interesting, most of the materials are the official tutorials, made by Epic crew. Big applause for taking such a good care for the new adventurers!

UE4 is, of course, a very big tool and it contains many instruments. You can spend years for mastering the material editor, or particle editor, or the animation system only. I will show materials telling how to easily jump into the making simple games without knowing every detail of the engine. It will be an entry point. Mastering the tool is a different story.

Unreal Engine 4 – Debugging on Android

andue4Debugging is the prose of life for every programmer. In Unreal Engine 4 there are many tools for debugging and profiling a game on Windows and Mac. Even for iOS, the XCode is a fine tool for nice bug hunting. But the Android was always… odd. For a long time the logcat was the only source of information about what is going inside the Unreal Engine game and it was always frustrating when something is crashing on device only. Theoretically, if something works in the editor it should works on the device too, but… this is theory and practice shows something completely different ;)

A new era for Android on Unreal Engine?

It might be, because with Visual Studio 2015 we received a powerful IDE that supports programming and debugging for Android (and other mobile platforms too) out of the box! And, it appears, that with the same tools we can easily debug the native c++ code on Android device!

Gamedev Reactions on Tumblr!

First of all – Happy New Year everybody! Let those next 366 days (extra day, yay!) shall be filled with awesome games, new live experiences, good health and wealth, and awesome projects that will astound the world!

Also, with a new year, the Gamedev Reactions started on Tumblr! I could find only very similar tumblrs but not strictly for Gamedev… Strange.

The start is very modest, but it should expand fast. There are so many situations that requires the animated representation of themselves ;)

Using Cheat Manager in Unreal Engine 4

The cheat manager in Unreal Engine 4 is a class that handles commands useful for making testing much easier. In fact it’s a container for most of the exec functions. Those functions can be implemented in many places – GameInstance classes or PlayerController classes but it’s good to keep them in one place in order to have the project more organized.
There are plenty of commands in the base Cheat Manager already – You can check all of them in the Engine \ Source \ Runtime \ Engine \ Classes \ GameFramework \ CheatManager.h file. But if You want to extend the Cheat Manager in Your game there are few steps that must be followed.

Real Boxing 2 Reveal

There were no any new parts of UE4 tutorial for beginners lately. This fact put me in disgrace, but last few weeks were incredibly tough for me, because we were working hard on soon upcoming game – Real Boxing 2!

The early version has made into the Gamescom and there is a sweet trailer on the Internet

The one thing I can tell is that I was working with the engine closely and have few ideas for new tutorials.
